1.1 - The Unit
The First Ranger Battalion is a community of individuals who share common interests. As a member of that community, you must respect the others who are a part of it. You have lived and worked with others before, and the concept of "treating others as you wish to be treated," should be familiar to you. Do not demean or belittle your fellow members, or the "civilians" who also use our server and forums. Act in a mature manner at all times.

1.2 - Responsibility
Everything in this unit is a team effort. Always be conscious that when you fail to fulfill your obligations, you affect others. For example, if you filled out an application, and then don't show up for training, you're hurting everyone who is giving up their free time to play, and we're depending on you. If you make things more difficult for others through your own laziness, you will be punished accordingly.

1.3 - General
By enlisting in the Battalion, you obligate yourself to do certain things. Obviously attending drills is one of them, but there are others. All of these are intended to improve the sense of community, and to keep the group healthy and strong. We don't expect you to give up your social life for a video game, but you are a member, and we ask you to be active and participate. If you never do, why are you in the unit? We also ask that when you are unable to participate, you inform us by posting excuses and requesting LOAs (described below). If you fail to fulfill these obligations, you will eventually be discharged one way or another.

1.4 - Server Activity
You are required to regularly play on our public server. Keeping the server full gives us the opportunity to grow and recruit new members. While in the server you should advertise. Also, remember that as a Private, you are required to play on the Allied team whenever possible, since we are an Allied Unit. Only join Axis if there is a team imbalance, and switch back as soon as possible. Pfc.s on up are exempt from this restriction.

1.5 - Forum Activity
You are expected to maintain activity in the forums, check them daily if possible. Announcements, and other crucial information come at random, and if you only check the forums once a week you will miss them. From time to time, an automatic discharge check-in will be posted wherein failure to check in within the appointed time will result in an immediate discharge.

1.6 - Ventrilo
The primary means of communication between the members is Ventrilo. Ventrilo is a voice communication program used by the unit. We hold meetings in there, and also just hang out. Every now and again, Ventrilo is needed in an emergency situation when the voice codec in the game server is malfunctioning. Everyone is required to download and install it.

Download Ventrilo:

Our Ventrilo Server:
IP: vent3.gameservers.com
Port: 4370

1.7 - Training and Excuses
You are of course required to attend Basic Combat Training. Chapter 3 will contain further information on them and how to process an excuse. If you cannot attend a drill, you must post an excuse in the proper format within 24 hours of the drill's completion. All excuses are filed in the "Recruit Drill Excuses" forum.

1.9 - Leaves of Absence
If you cannot be active in our server or forums for more than 3 days at a time, you must go on LOA. The maximum length of an LOA for a recruit is 1 month; for full members, it is 3 months. See the S-1 Administration forum for more information.

1.10 - Be Presentable
This is a realism unit, not a clan. There are certain things we expect you to do in order to "look" the part:

Keep your Steam Friends name and avatar in regulation. Having your avatar in regulation simply means having it reflect your current rank in the unit. Make sure you update it if/when you are promoted. You will not have any ribbons, badges, or a serial number until you graduate BCT. Always enter the server with your tags on, especially before Basic Training.

Your forum profile should not have any extraneous or unnecessary information. Due to our size, we have been targeted by people trying to steal Steam accounts and other valuable information. You are allowed to have a signature picture if it is within good taste.

Be proud of your [1st RB] tags on your in-game name. Never enter the server without them, or with an improper rank, or you will be punished accordingly.

When posting on the forums or speaking in the server, use proper spelling and grammar. The occasional lol or jk is acceptable, but do not use excessive 1337 or internet speak.

1.11 - Confidentiality
Not everything that goes on in the unit is a public matter. All server information (e.g. passwords), drill procedures, handbooks, and proprietary media including but not limited to images, videos, maps, map textures, logos, and signatures are property of the 1st Ranger Battalion. As a member you are privileged to have this information and are not to distribute it to any one for any reason. Should a password be leaked, the Command Staff will hunt down the person who leaked it and deal with them quickly and severely. If you are not sure whether certain info can be made public, play it safe and don't release it - ask a superior for clarification.

^ Return to TOC

1.12 - Leaders
In the 1st Ranger Battalion, as in the Army, your superiors are the officers and non-commissioned officers (NCOs). These individuals are chosen from among our ranks by the Unit's Commanding Officer, and represent those who have shown consistent dedication and maturity, a willingness to help the unit, and genuine leadership ability. Their hard work is always to be respected.

1.13 - Follow Orders
The first thing to appreciate is that you are subject to the orders of officers and NCOs placed over you. The officers and NCOs are entitled to be, and must be obeyed and respected by all soldiers under them. Make it a rule that you will always obey them promptly and effectively. This facilitates their ability to keep things organized and also fun. It is also in keeping with the authenticity we are attempting to display.

1.14 - Problems with Your Superiors
While a Private is expected to obey the commands of his superiors, there will always be times when you have problems with your superiors. You may feel they are neglecting you, or mistreating you, etc. If that is the case, you should not begin disobeying their orders or publicly disrespecting them. You should approach your superior privately and voice your concerns in a mature and respectful manner. If you feel uncomfortable doing this, you can approach the Company First Sergeant with your problem. The First Sergeant is responsible for every single enlisted man in the Company. He is there for your benefit. You will never be punished for speaking your mind, provided it is done in this proper way. You may not always get what you want, but you will always be heard. Ultimately, the Battalion's Commanding Officer is the judge of his subordinates. If one of your superiors is acting improperly, he will be punished or removed.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

2.1 - Use of Ranks
The 1st Ranger Battalion uses a rank system which is kept as close as possible to that used by the United States Army during WWII. Ranks are listed in order from highest to lowest. The exception is technicians, which are in their own category. Listed next to each rank is its abbreviation and pay grade.

2.2 - Officers
The highest ranking members of the Unit are the officers. They set policy for the unit and exercise authority over large groups of soldiers. These are the only members who merit a salute.

MAJOR (O-4, Maj.)

CAPTAIN (O-3, Capt.)

FIRST LIEUTENANT (O-2, 1st Lt.)

SECOND LIEUTENANT (O-1, 2nd Lt.)

2.3 - Senior Non-Commissioned Officers
SNCOs are NCOs who have been promoted up through the ranks due to their dedication and experience. They will generally serve as senior advisors to the officers, and will oversee the NCOs under their command to make sure the Officers' polices are enforced. They will lead men in combat as well.

MASTER SERGEANT (E-1, M/Sgt.)

FIRST SERGEANT (E-1, 1st Sgt.)

TECHNICAL SERGEANT (E-2, T/Sgt.)

2.4 - Non-Commissioned Officers
NCOs are the backbone of the army. They are granted their authority by their superiors and serve as their subordinates. Their role is to enforce the policies and regulations set by the officers, as well as to lead groups of soldiers in combat.

STAFF SERGEANT (E-3, S/Sgt.)

SERGEANT (E-4, Sgt.)

2.5 - Enlisted Men
At the bottom of the list are enlisted men. These are the regular infantry soldiers who make up the majority of the unit. Their role is to follow orders and carry them out to the best of their ability.

PRIVATE FIRST CLASS (E-6, Pfc.)

PRIVATE (E-7, Pvt.)

2.6 - Technicians
These are NCOs who serve in positions which require skills of a technical nature, such as clerks; they do the unit's paperwork as part of the Adjutant's Office. Though they are NCOs, they generally do not exercise authority over other soldiers, except those that are part of their specific office. They may serve in other leadership positions, but only in the absence of other qualified NCOs. Each Technician rank has an NCO equivalent, and they should be addressed as such. (i.e. a T/5 should be addressed as "Corporal"; a T/4 as "Sergeant," and a T/3 as "Staff Sergeant")

2.7 - Company HQ
Battalion Headquarters is the element of the Battalion occupied by the Battalion Commander and Executive Officer along with his staff officers.

COMMANDING OFFICER (CO) - The Commanding Officer is responsible for everything that goes on in the Battalion. Obviously he cannot do everything himself, so he delegates many responsibilities to his subordinate Officers and NCOs. The CO has final say in all unit matters. This position is generally filled by a Major, but in the absence of one, a Cpt. may occupy the role.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER (XO) - The Executive Officer assists the CO in running the battalion by taking care of various day-to-day tasks, freeing up the CO to focus on larger matters. His primary role is to oversee the staff officers. This position is generally held by a Cpt or a 1Lt.

HEAD ADJUTANT (BATTALION S-1) - The Head Adjutant's position may be filled by an officer, but in the absence of one is generally held by the senior-most technician in the battalion. He reports to the Battalion XO, and coordinates all of the unit's paperwork. He may have a staff under him, consisting of the Company Clerks and other technicians and enlisted men, who function as the "Adjutant's Office."

SECURITY OFFICER (BATTALION S-2) - The Intelligence Officer also reports to the Battalion XO, and is responsible for all security relating to the unit. All bans and unbans will be handled by this office. From forum, to our web presence, to our game server, this office is responsible for upholding the integrity and providing a pleasurable experience for all members. This position is typically held by the Company First Sergeant.

TRAINING AND OPERATIONS OFFICER (BATTALION S-3) - The Training and Operations Officer oversees the unit's training program. He will plan and run unit drills along with his training staff and senior NCOs. He also reports to the Battalion XO. This position is typically held by the Company First Sergeant.

LOGISTICS OFFICER (BATTALION S-4) - The Logistics Officer oversees the unit's technical ends. He is responsible for running the day-to-day business of maintaining the game server, website, forums, and Ventrilo server.

PLANNING OFFICER (BATTALION S-5) - The Planning Officer will plan strategies and often play a key role in organizing and running match practices. He will also have a staff under him referred to as the Intelligence Section. This position is typically held by a 1Lt. or 2Lt.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICER (BATTALION S-6) - The Public Affairs Officer is responsible for keeping track of other units within the community. This is important because it allows us to be in touch with other units to enable quick and friendly matches.

COMPANY FIRST SERGEANT- The Company First Sergeant is both a rank and a position. He is the senior-most NCO in the entire Company. He advises the Company CO on all matters concerning enlisted men, and serves as an advocate for them. He supervises and advises the Platoon Sergeants and will generally play a large role in training the men.

2.8 - Platoon HQ
The Company is further broken down into platoons. This is where the bulk of the Company's manpower lies. When recruits graduate from Basic Training, they will be placed in one of our regular platoons.

PLATOON LEADER - This position is generally filled by a 2Lt. He oversees the Platoon and sets policy for it. He reports directly to the XO. In the absence of a 2Lt. the Position of Platoon Leader may be filled by a T/Sgt. or even the Company 1st Sgt.

PLATOON SERGEANT - Generally a T/Sgt. or S/Sgt., the Platoon Sergeant serves as an adviser to the Platoon Leader and oversees the Squad Leaders, making sure they enforce the Platoon Leader's policies.

2.10 - Squads
Platoons are broken down into smaller groups called squads. Besides the Squad Leader and Assistant Squad Leader, the other members of squads are ordinary enlisted men, generally assigned rifles or other special weapons if they are qualified for them. On a roster however, all Privates and Pfc.s in a squad will be listed as "Rifleman" because every Ranger is a rifleman first.

SQUAD LEADER - Generally filled by a Sgt., though in the absence of one, a Cpl. may take the role. A Squad Leader is responsible for the individual discipline and training of his squad of 8-10 men.

ASSISTANT SQUAD LEADER - Generally filled by a Cpl., though it may be taken on by a Pfc. who demonstrates some leadership abilities. The ASL assists the squad leader with anything he needs, and is essentially a SL in training.

___________________________________________________________________________

2.11 - Support System
The Chain of Command (CoC) is the hierarchy described above, from Private to Squad Leader to Platoon Sergeant and up (See Figures 2.3 and 2.4). The CoC serves two purposes. It allows orders from the higher ranks to reach the lower ranks, and it allows the questions and problems of the lower ranks to reach the higher ranks. What you need to know about the CoC is this: FOLLOW IT. As a Private, you should go to your Squad Leader first with questions, problems, and concerns. If you have a suggestion for the unit, go to your SL; if you have a problem with another private, go to your SL; if you have a question, go to your SL, etc. Never skip levels in the Chain of Command. For example, never go directly to the CO with a question. The only kind of problem you do not need to go to your SL first with is when you have a problem with a superior (NCO or Officer). In this case, seek your Company First Sergeant.

^ Return to TOC

2.12 - Pvt. to Pfc.
To be promoted to Pfc. from Pvt. you must display dedication and maturity and prove to be a reliable member of the unit. You can also be promoted to Pfc. immediately following your graduation from BCT if you are selected as the "Honorary Pfc." The HPfc. is the recruit who has stood out the most during their training, there is a maximum of 1 per Training Platoon.

2.13 - Pfc. to Cpl. and Higher
Being promoted to an NCO position is something to be proud of, but it will not come easily. Understand that there are a very limited number of NCO and Officer positions open in our unit compared to the entire roster. We can only promote the best of the best. The criteria used are: Dedication, Maturity, Leadership Ability, and Activity. You must also be accepted and pass NCO School Training to be promoted. Some members stand out quickly and may be promoted faster, some members may not make Cpl. for several months, others may never attain the rank at all. Being promoted up through the NCO ranks requires further dedication and experience. Do not continually ask why you have not been promoted or when you will become an NCO, it will only serve to aggravate your superiors. You may ask what you can do to improve, but do not make it your goal to work your name and Cpl. into every sentence. We are a large unit; you have to stand out if you want to be promoted. Don't tell us you want to be promoted, show us you are ready.

3.2 - Dates and Times
During your training you will attend Drills every Tuesday and Thursday for 2 weeks. You must attend at least 2/4 in order to graduate. All drills are held at 2000 hours EST (8 PM) in our server.

To view your specific training dates, utilize the calendar feature of our forums located here:

Your conduct during drills is especially important. You must always act in a mature and professional manner. The instructors will not waste your time if you do not waste theirs. If an instructor gives you an order, execute it quickly and efficiently, and without complaint.

3.4 - Use of Microphones
Never use your microphone during drills (unless you are given permission). This makes it easier for everyone to hear the instructors' commands. Using your microphone is also a privilege, and is granted only to NCOs.

3.5 - Asking Permission to Speak
Never speak unless spoken to. If you have a question, you must first ask for permission to speak (as described in the "creating binds" section), then when given permission, you will type out your question.

Falling-in should be done in rank order; when lined up those of superior rank should be on your right, and those of inferior rank should be on your left. Once you fall-in, you must always be standing at the "Position of Attention."

3.7 - The Position of Attention
When at the position of attention, you should be facing forward with your chin level to the ground and your pistol out. You should not move. There is no reason to touch your keyboard and mouse. All Drills will be lead by an Instructor who will have several assistants. During Basic Training expect the Drill Instructors to yell and point out each and every one of your mistakes, however minor they may seem. You may also be subjected to punishments, some which will be mildly humiliating, and many which will be obnoxiously tedious, and which may seem pointless to you.

3.9 - The Purpose of Training
Try not to take this all too personally, this is all intended to increase your discipline and get you to know and correct your mistakes, and get you used to the idea of being part of a realism unit. Additionally, as part of a realism unit, the Drill Instructors are playing their role, much like re-enactors. We hold plenty of events where there will be time to "goof-off" but for us, drills are a serious thing.

3.10 - Relationship with Instructors
The Instructors do not think themselves as infallible and high and mighty as they may attempt to seem. They are experienced, but are learning just as you are. If you have a problem with a particular aspect of drills, such as a punishment you felt was too harsh, you are free to approach the instructor privately and voice your concerns. You will not be punished for this provided it is done respectfully.

Now every time you hit that key, whatever command you put in will be automatically executed. For example, if you enter the following command, you will say "Rangers lead the way!" in all chat every time you hit f1. Make sure you have the word say in front of the text you want:

bind f1 "say Rangers lead the way!"

3.12 - Important Binds
There are 5 binds you will need to create before you begin training. Make sure you chose keys that are easy to remember so you don't forget which one is which.

*Salute* - In exactly that format, one asterisk on each side and a capital S.

*Permission to speak* - In exactly that format, 1 asterisk on each side, capital P and lower case t and s. You must use this any time you have a question during drills.

Rangers lead the way! - To be said any time your team wins a round in the public server. Do not spam it.

All the way, Sir! - When an officer is in the server, and you are on his team when you win a round, you will wait for him to say Rangers lead the way! You will respond with: All the way, Sir!

Advertisement Bind - Create a bind that advertises our unit to prospective members. Ex: "Join the Rangers, enlist today! www.1strangers.us" Be creative with the bind if you want, but include our website and an easy to understand message. When in the public server, make sure someone displays an advertisement every few minutes. There is no need to spam it.

3.13 - CORDs
CORDs are always performed when lined up and starting from the position of attention. These are practiced as a way of maintaining discipline within the unit. When we hold a match against another unit, we will perform CORDs as a sign of respect to them. Learning CORDs is important. At the end of training you will be tested on them so that you can graduate.

3.14 - Preparation
Before you begin CORDs, make sure you have the following commands entered into your console:

cl_autoreload 0
hud_fastswitch 0

3.15 - The Commands
The basic commands that make up CORDs:

Detail...Attention - Preparatory Command (Do nothing)

Present ARMS - You will switch to your rifle.

Ready - You will aim your weapon 45 degrees up from horizontal.

Aim - You will zoom into iron sight mode.

Fire - You will fire off one round, and control your recoil so that you return to 45 degrees from the horizontal.

Fire - You will fire off one round, and control your recoil so that you return to 45 degrees from the horizontal.

Fire - You will fire off one round, and control your recoil so that you return to 45 degrees from the horizontal.

Inspection...Arms - On ARMS you will aim further upward, coming to a stop at the top of your screen.

Fire - You will fire off all remaining rounds, controlling your recoil so you are centered. DO NOT RELOAD.

Recover. . . ARMS - On the command of ARMS you will lower your rifle back to horizontal, taking 3 seconds to do so.

Charge ARMS - You will reload your rifle and immediately switch to your pistol and return to the position of attention. Be careful not to switch to your pistol too quickly. If you do not complete the reloading animation, you will find your rifle still empty when you switch back to it.

4.1 - The Meaning of Discipline
During your time in the unit, you may wonder why the officers and NCOs insist on perfection in what appear to be minor details. Why must angles be so exact when performing Rifle Drills; why must lines of soldiers be kept perfectly straight; why must punishments be handed out for even the most minute errors against signature and avatar regulations; why must officers be saluted without fail; why is proper grammar and spelling on the forums and in the server so important? These things are part of your disciplinary training.

4.2 - The Purpose of Discipline
The discipline that we ask from our members is not meant to ruin your fun, but to preserve the fun of others. The rules we have in place allow your superiors to organize and efficiently run the practices and matches we all want to play and learn from. When you screw around and disrupt these events you are wasting the time of others who might want to participate. Such behavior will not be tolerated. There will be time to "goof-off," but there are also times when seriousness is required of you. Always remember that we are a realism unit and not a clan. We are portraying a military unit, and discipline is important to us. We are proud of this unit and intend to portray it in the best light. We expect the same from you. Discipline leads to teamwork, which will lead to victory.

4.3 - Saluting
Soldiers should always be courteous and respectful of their superiors. Saluting is part of that. A military salute is rendered to all Officers (2nd Lt. - Maj.) of the 1st Ranger Battalion and allied realism units. Only officers are to be saluted, NOT Non-Commissioned officers or other enlisted men. The same goes for the real military. Failure to salute an officer is considered both rude and a breach of military etiquette, and will call for punishment. Always check to see if an Officer is present rather than just saluting blindly when you enter the server. Saluting at the wrong time, or saluting the wrong person, is just as bad as not saluting.

4.4 - How to Salute
Obviously, your player model cannot render a proper military salute in game. Therefore, a salute is rendered by means of typing *Salute* in all chat for the Officer to see.

4.5 - When to Salute
There are four basic occasions where you have the opportunity to salute an officer:

The first is when you join the server, and an officer is already in the server. This means, that when you enter the server, you Salute.

The second is when you exit the server, and an officer is in the server. This means, that when you exit the server, you Salute.

The third is when you are in the server and an officer joins. You, yourself, salute the officer when he joins a team.

The fourth is when you are in the server and an officer exits. The officer will salute, and in which case, you return the Salute.

4.6 - Addressing Superiors
As Rangers, it is required that you follow military etiquette, and properly address those superior to you in rank. If you fail to show the proper respect, you may be punished accordingly.

OTHER PRIVATES AND PFCS - You may address your fellow privates by their last name only. Additionally, if you are a private, you do not need to address a Pfc. by their rank. Pfc.s have no authority over Privates.

NCOs - An NCO should be addressed by his rank and last name together, or by his rank alone. Additionally, you may address most of the different grades of sergeant (Sgt. - T/Sgt.) by "Sergeant" or "Sarge," rather than saying the full name of their rank, and still remain respectful. You MUST address a 1st Sgt. or a M/Sgt. by his full rank title however.

OFFICERS - An Officer should be addressed by his rank and last name together, his rank alone, or by Sir. Only Officers are Sirs. Do NOT call an NCO Sir, it is inappropriate.

4.7 - Demerits
Demerits are the most widespread form of punishment used in the unit. A demerit is a mark for misconduct on your record. Each demerit stays on your record for 30 days. An accumulation of three demerits will cause you to be discharged from the unit. You can earn a demerit for any number of infractions, such as failing to salute, disobeying orders, etc. See the "Uniform Code of Military Justice" in the S-1 Administration forum for more information on infractions. There is a "Master Demerit List" posted there where you can check your demerit count.

4.8 - Discharges
If you accumulate too many demerits, or are otherwise inactive or display conduct unbecoming a Ranger, you may be discharged from the unit. There are three categories of discharges:

HONORABLE - These are granted to all members who resign of their own accord and in good standing. Anyone who has been granted an honorable discharge may reapply for enlistment at any time.

GENERAL - These are given to members who accumulate three demerits for generally minor infractions, such as failing to salute and post drill excuses. You may also be given a general discharge if you are deemed Away without leave (AWOL). Anyone given a general discharge may reapply at any time after three weeks from their discharge date.

DISHONORABLE - These are given to members who accumulate three demerits for major infractions, such as disobeying orders and conduct unbecoming a Ranger. Other infractions such as distributing confidential information to non-members, or double-clanning, may earn you an immediate dishonorable discharge. Those who have been dishonorably discharged may never reapply.

5.1 - What is Realism?
As we are a realism unit, the 1st prefers to play a special kind of game play called "realism." It is much different from the "death match" style play seen on the public server. Its rules force teams to utilize teamwork, stealth, and proper tactics in order to be successful.

5.2 - Set-Up
In a Realism match, one team attacks and the other defends. An imaginary boundary line is drawn (usually cutting the map in half) on the map to divide it into German and Allied sections. The defending team is only allowed to set-up on their side of the map, and can use any kind of defense they want. Camping is not discouraged; they are defending a position. The defending team is usually given 5 minutes prep time. The attacking team starts in their spawn, usually dividing up into squads, and moves out into enemy territory. The attacking team is usually given 15 minutes to complete their attack once the round has begun. After each team has attacked and defended as either axis or allies, they may switch and attack and defend as the other side.

5.3 - Victory
The objective of a realism match is to eliminate every member of the oposing team. In realism you only get one "life." If you are killed, you go spectator and wait until the end of the round. You do not respawn. Flag caps are not an objective and have no bearing on the match, save letting the enemy know where you are.

5.4 - Other Rules
There is obviously no hacking allowed. Additionally, there is no "player-boosting" into areas you could not reach by yourself. You may boost off of furniture or other surfaces however. The defending team is not allowed to set-up in their spawn. You are also not allowed to prime Rifle Grenades by shooting them at the ground and picking them up. The grenade will become "glued" in your hand and you will have no choice but to die.
